Here at Plus 1 Digital, we’re obviously big fans of the digital world, and testing out new apps is just another exciting part of the job! And so on our latest mission we decided to test the waters with a little something called, ‘Meowchat’. You might never have heard of it (even though it launched last year) as it only took off in the last few weeks. However, many people have still been left wondering, ‘What on earth is meowchat?’ Well we’re here to answer your digital problems…

First impressions? Lets put it this way, within minutes I am bombarded with an image of a semi naked teenager, asking if I am, “cumin to join?” from the random chat, which matches you with another person somewhere in the world. So naturally, I take the opportunity to laugh at him, and then give him a lesson in talking to a lady. He hastily apologises after I tell him he’s a part of my experiment. Honestly, where do these kids learn manners anymore?

For all those wondering what Meowchat essentially is, simply put, it’s like a very weird version of Tinder, Instagram and Whatsapp where people of all ages can converse and/or abuse each other for kicks. Sounds like fun right?

One of the first things I notice is the age gap. The majority of users seem to be a tweens but then on the other hand of the spectrum, there are a lot of old men. An excellent recipe for a disaster if you ask me.

In terms of usability, it’s easy to figure out. You can easily switch between chats (both random chat and group chats) and other functions like your feed (which shows you photos of people you ‘fav’) and explore tool. Your profile is where you can link up your Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Tumblr as well as enter details on your hobbies and interests. Common themes to hobbies and interests seem to be gym, sex and drinking. For the demographic of the app, this is slightly concerning! In theory this tool should work better for matching people because of the different filters but just because I’m matched with someone else who likes coconuts doesn’t mean I really want to talk to them!

But I press on trying to find redeeming factors to Meowchat. Every time I go on the group chat it’s just an incoherent mess of curse words and provocative photos as well as the odd voice recording. All happening at such a hugely fast rate you can barely keep up with the trash talk. It seems like keeping up with Meowchat as an actual user would be a full time job in itself.

Meowchat kind of creates a popularity contest amongst its users. Who all on the whole, only speak to you to ask for a ‘favourite’, as well as lots of ‘fav for fav?’s throw out there.

The explore option means you can pinpoint somewhere you want to talk to people. So I take myself over the world checking out some of the profiles of people in Australia, Italy and Germany. And it’s the same the world over, lots of attention-seeking and crude behaviour.

To round up, personally the only reason I would use this app is probably for the cute pictures of cats, but that’s what Instagram is for anyway. So there you go, I did the groundwork for you. Now you can decide whether you would like to take the plunge into the crazy world of Meowchat!
