How To Become Pinteresting!

Home › Blog › How To Become Pinteresting!

It’s incredibly easy to whittle away hours on Pinterest, it’s fun and it’s a great research tool. But the fact of the matter is that with its constantly growing audience, Pinterest is a serious tool that should be mastered by every marketer, blogger and business owner. With all of this in mind, I recently switched from my rather chaotic, “just-for-fun” pinning to a more strategic approach – with a focus on driving traffic to my blog. It’s working and I still have fun along the way!

The key is the keyword

One of the basic rules to attract followers is to include a proper description on your pins and name your boards accurately – if your pinning handbags, say that! Even if you are a fantastic copywriter, don’t try and get too creative – most people are not that imaginative when they use the search tool, in fact they are pretty precise about what they are looking for. Name your boards ina way that people will know exactly what they’re going to get when they follow you.

It might sound obvious but don’t forget that the more amazing your pins look the more shareable they will be. Your stream of images needs to look professional and… pretty. If you can’t take great photos, either learn how to or hire a photographer who can help. Also, don’t forget to make sure your images are vertical rather than horizontal (as there is a width limit) and remember to set the most appealing images as the cover photos for your boards.

Scale effect

The more boards and pins you have, the more interesting you will appear to potential new followers. And the more followers you have, the more people will view you as an expert. So – pin a few items every day, or even twice a day (find out what time of day your followers tend to be the most active). It’s really about the quality but there does need to be a certain amount of quantity in order to make an impact.

Who are you?

You need to know exactly who your audience is and be very clear about who you’re targeting. What topics do people search for? Click on the Popular categories on the Pinterest home page to research trends and discover new popular topics and then implement those as part of your pinning strategy. It’s also important to keep track on which of your pins are the most popular and do more of them – it might not always be the ones that you expect… And like every social media channel you need to be sociable, like and repin other people’s pins and write comments.

Mixed content

To stand out from the crowd, you need to mix interesting images that you find with your own original images – even the biggest brands use some images that aren’t their own OR at least include a range of different shots from events and advertising shoots. Pinterest is all about lifestyle, so make sure you are showing people the personality of your brand.

Just as a closing thought – some of the most pinnable content includes: tutorials, recipes and how-to posts (just to get you started – that’s not all).
