Everybody knows that a “Facebook Minute” is equivalent to 10 minutes in the real world. Time spent on social media flies by (literally) and before you know it 30 minutes have passed and you’ve posted 1 picture. So, with this in mind, if you are planning to do something else with your day, you need a structured way of managing the social media accounts for your business.
We suggest that you spend one to one and a half hours a day, (not more!) managing your social media pages and here is an easy way to do it, whilst still making sure you are keeping everything under control.
Finding Content:
This is a great tool for gathering useful websites and sources of news that are relevant to your brand, all in one place. Open an account (you can link it with a Google reader account) and then start adding all of the content you currently read on the Internet and find useful for your brand (blogs, magazines, portals, everything!). You can divide it into different categories and link to multiple social media accounts and tools. You might also find that it suggests some interesting sites that you are not using at the moment…
Then it’s time to get on Pinterest. Aside from being one of the most popular social networks, it is a GREAT source of visual content and provides a lot of inspiration for content that you can use across your Facebook, Twitter and other social accounts. Check out what’s trending on Pinterest, search for key terms related to your brand – there is a lot to be found
Yes Reddit – another great source for social media managers. This may not be a resource that you find yourself every single day, but it is definitely something that you should be keeping a close eye on, a source full of inspiring content and some of the best discussions happening online.

Taking the pain out of scheduling:Once your Feedly account has been set up, it’s time to get Buffer (as your Browser Add-On). Buffer is perfect for Scheduling Twitter and Facebook posts without you having to over-think exactly what time things should be released, or periodically plan things around your meetings and other work. It buffers up to 10 tweets at a time – which is perfect as it’s automated but makes sure you are still very much on top of what is being published on your pages and when!
There definitely isn’t a one-size fits all plan and the amount of time you spend will vary in the beginning and depend on your brand and the amount of content available. But as a guide we suggest that you spend up to one hour first thing in the morning – broken down into:
- Checking Feedly and choosing articles to share – just click the Buffer button to pass things straight to your schedule.
- Searching Pinterest and Reddit for any other content you think is relevant or perhaps something that inspires you to create your own content.
- Log on to twitter and interact with a few of your followers to keep your engagement levels up.
Then that’s it for the first part of the day – see it really shouldn’t take that long!
You can then come back after lunch to do a quick catch up on your accounts, see if there is anything new worth sharing or if you need to reply to any of your fans and followers. Mix this up with some unique content about your brand, some event content and then you are well on your way to getting your social channels in order.
